Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR)
The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research makes the full texts of guidelines available: Clinical Practice Guidelines, Quick Reference Guidelines and Consumer Guidelines (some are available in English and Spanish). The guidelines cover a number of conditions and health issues: pain management, pressure ulcers, depression, HIV, angina, etc.

AMA Health Insight
Focus on health information for different family members Interactive questionnaires for evaluating personal nutrition, body weight, and health history. Atlas of the human body and medical glossary. Access to AMA physician select.

American Academy of Family Physicians: Health Information for Patients
AAFP provides over 200 patient information pamphlets and brochures on common health topics, and on conditions specific to women, men, children, and the elderly.

Bluestem: Health for Kanasans
From the Dykes Library at the University of Kansas Medical Center, this is a searchable list of topics, each of which links to other resources in the subject area. Included are descriptions of the resources.

Consumer Information Catalog: Health
Developed by the Consumer Information Center in Pueblo, Colorado, part of the U.S. General Services Administration, this site contains text versions of pamphlets on a variety of health topics including drugs and health aids, medical problems and mental health.

Galaxy – Health – Community
Galaxy, from Tradewave, is a “guide to worldwide information and services.” The Community Health section is a very large hotlist of health resources, including condition-specific resources, articles, guides, product and service descriptions, collections, periodicals, discussion groups, directories and organizations.

Go Ask Alice
From the Healthwise office of Columbia University’s Health Education Division, Alice is an interactive question and answer resource. Questions may be asked about topics that include relationships, nutrition and diet, drugs, sex, alcohol and stress. Previous questions posed to Alice with their answers have been archived.

Health A to Z
Provides both a structured list of condition-related sites as well as a search engine that retrieves reviewed and ranked sites on the web.

Healthfinder
A new gateway consumer health information web site maintained by the Department of Health and Human Services. It includes information offered by federal, state, and local government agencies, not for profit organizations, and universities.

Health Oasis
Consumer health information and news from the Mayo Clinic.

Healthy Devil On-Line
A product of Duke University, this site includes some student health-related information, but contains numerous full text documents about general, men’s and women’s health, smoking, contraception, emotional health, etc.

InteliHealth
A cooperative venture between John Hopkins University and Aetna Health Insurance, providing information on specific illnesses, pharmaceuticals, and general health topics. This site provides physician-reviewed, consumer-friendly articles, an Ask-the-Doc feature, online communities and a medical dictionary.

Martindale’s Health Science Guide
University of California – Irvine: a vast collection of medical information, with other resources such as dictionaries, calculation tools, and international links.

Med Help
A non-profit site, providing information and patient networking, as well as physician directories (by specialty and by patient recommendation) and medical news. Also available is an online advice service.

Medical Matrix
Provides access to full text journals and information on specific conditions/diseases, medical education and employment, and the heathcare industry. Although quite comprehensive and free to all users, registration is required.

Medical Web Search
A resource tool for searching thousands of preselected medical information sites on the web.

MEDLINEplus
MEDLINE is the primary source for accessing the clinical medical literature, and is maintained by the National Library of Medicine. MEDLINEplus is the “consumer-oriented” equivalent, providing links to information on specific conditions. In addition, the site provides general resources, such as online medical dictionaries and directories of hospitals, clearinghouses, medical libraries, and other organizations.

Medscape
Provides access to peer-reviewed medical information. Use is free but registration is required.

Multimedia Medical Reference Library
A very large resource, organized by medical condition and linking to other resources, this library is created by Jonathan Tward.

National Institutes of Health – Consumer Health Information
The current list of online consumer publications, organized by institute: National Cancer Institute, National Eye Institute, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, etc. The list is constantly growing, and many more publications are available in print form by mail.

NetWellness
Produced by the University of Cincinnati Medical Center Libraries, this resource is a well-developed site for consumer health. It contains full text information about major health problems or issues: aging, AIDS, cancer, heart disease, etc. In addition, access is provided to medical databases for Tristate Online users and OVCHIN workstations, and online versions of some major medical reference books are also included.

NOAH: New York Online Access to Health
An English/Spanish site providing well-structured access to high quality health information on the web. Produced collaboratively by the City University of New York, New York Public Library, New York Academy of Medicine, and others.

OnHealth
Compiled with the help of physician advisors, OnHealth provides access to concise information on many various illnesses and conditions, weekly “in-depth” reports, city-specific health guides, and online discussion forums. Allows personalization of health information. Patient Advocate Foundation, Inc:
Patient Advocate Foundation is a national non-profit organization that serves as an active liaison between the patient and their insurer, employer and/or creditors to resolve insurance, job retention and/or debt crisis matters relative to their diagnosis through case managers, doctors and attorneys. Patient Advocate Foundation seeks to safeguard patients through effective mediation assuring access to care, maintenance of employment and preservation of their financial stability.

The Virtual Hospital: Information for Patients
From the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, this site includes the Iowa Health Book, which consists of the full text of patient education materials on many medical conditions.
